International Disability Rights Monitor - CIR Set To Launch Regional European IDRM CIR Set To Launch Regional European IDRM

CHICAGO (Oct. 15, 2007)—The Center for International Rehabilitation (CIR) has completed and is set to formally launch the Regional IDRM report of Europe on Dec. 4, 2007, coinciding with the International Day of People with a Disability.

The report is the first of its kind that fully details the level of inclusiveness of people living with disabilities in 14 European counties. The International Disability Rights Monitor (IDRM) is a project that works to advance the use of international law in ensuring that the human rights of people with disabilities are respected and enforced around the globe.

In December 2006, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the first ever global convention on the protection and promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Its intent is to end the discrimination that the estimated 650 million people with disabilities worldwide experience daily and to ensure that people with disabilities are fully contributing members of society.

This report comes as the fourth installment of the IDRM project. It represents an ongoing collaboration between the Center for International Rehabilitation, the European Disability Forum (EDF) and many other international disability groups. More than 60 disability advocates from Latin America, Asia, and Europe have been trained on data collection, reporting, and advocacy to produce these publications.
